Current Fire Bans or Outdoor Burning Restrictions

Due to ongoing poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke affecting the region, the Municipality of Leamington has enacted a temporary fire ban effective Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 12:00 PM.

The ban is expected to remain in effect until Sunday, July 19, 2026, at 12:00 PM, at which time it is anticipated to be lifted, subject to air quality conditions.

The Municipality will continue to monitor air quality conditions and will advise the public if the duration of the fire ban changes.

To ensure public safety and compliance with environmental standards, the Municipality of Leamington regulates open-air burning under By-law 34-10, approved by Council in May 2010. Residents and property owners must obtain a permit for open-air burning activities that meet the criteria outlined in the by-law.

Types of Burn Permits

There are three types of permits issued:

A single event burn permit is for one-time clean-up burns on farmland (e.g., fence rows).

Requirements:

  • Minimum 150 feet from any building
  • Minimum 1,000 feet from oil wells or hazardous materials

An agricultural/annual burn permit is for ongoing agricultural use at a designated site (e.g., berm or pit).

Requirements:

  • Minimum 150 feet from any building
  • Minimum 1,000 feet from oil wells or hazardous materials

A residential campfire permit is for small, controlled campfires at residential properties.

Requirements:

  • Contained within a metal fire ring (maximum 24” diameter)
  • At least 15 feet away from any structure, fence, shed, landscaping, etc.
  • No overhead obstructions (e.g., tree branches or hydro lines)

Burn permits will require 3-5 business days for processing, and first time applicants will require an inspection prior to approval of the burn from Leamington Fire Services.
